Stage nelle Filippine: il racconto di Gry e Annie, due volontarie danesi

Cara Isla ng Bata – L’isola dei Bambini e cari sostenitori,

siamo due studentesse della Danimarca e siamo arrivate qui in Casa Famiglia nelle Filippine nel Dicembre 2015. A breve la nostra esperienza sarà terminata, ma abbiamo piacere di raccontarvi di noi.

In Danimarca, stiamo studiando per diventare assistenti sociali. Questa è la nostra ultima esperienza pratica.

Per il nostro stage abbiamo scelto le Filippine. Questo perché avevamo voglia di sperimentare la grande differenza culturale con il nostro paese e di metterci alla prova.

È molto importante per noi conoscere usi e costumi di altri paesi e soprattutto qual è il tipo di educazione che i bambini ricevono in altri contesti geografici. Qui nella Casa Famiglia di Bata ng Calabnugan, Inc. abbiamo fatto una grande esperienza e conosciuto bambine e bambini che, all’inizio della loro vita, hanno conosciuto già grandi sofferenze e difficoltà.

Quando siamo arrivate nella Casa Famiglia abbiamo ricevuto un caldo benvenuto da tutto lo staff di Bata Ng Calabnugan, Inc.: ci siamo recate a visitare le famiglie delle bambine accolte, abbiamo conosciuto i loro genitori (alcuni ma non tutti poiché in alcuni casi essi non ci sono più o sono lontani). Roselyn, l’assistente sociale ed Annie, una delle responsabili della Casa Famiglia, ci sono state sempre accanto e questo è stato di fondamentale importanza per la nostra formazione.

Sempre a dicembre, quando è iniziata la nostra esperienza sul campo, la bambina più piccola, Angel Divino aveva solo 2 mesi. Abbiamo cominciato a lavorare con lei sul contatto visivo e a darle degli stimoli, nel tentativo di favorire lo sviluppo della sua capacità di comunicazione. Abbiamo perciò messo in pratica alcune delle nozioni apprese durante il nostro percorso di studio e, credeteci, è stato bellissimo poter mettere alla prova le nostre abilità e competenze qui in Casa Famiglia insieme a queste meravigliose bambine.

Siamo qui da ormai quattro mesi e abbiamo instaurato un rapporto forte con tutte le bambine e ogni volta non vediamo l’ora di venire qui. Siamo così felici di vedere le bambine così gioiose, che giocano insieme e si comportano da sorelle una nei confronti dell’altra.

Il nostro programma varia di giorno in giorno: a volte siamo qui dalla mattina alla sera, in modo da poter trascorrere del tempo con le bambine più piccole che non vanno a scuola. Giochiamo con loro, leggiamo dei libri e insegniamo loro l’inglese di base o come contare fino a dieci.

La sfida più grande per noi è stare con le adolescenti. È difficile comunicare con loro dal momento che le nostre conoscenze del visayan, il gruppo di lingue che si parla in questa regione, sono poche. Con le bambine più grandi il lavoro è diverso e, se vogliamo, più difficile. Cerchiamo di ascoltarle, parliamo con loro dei problemi della vita quotidiana. Alcune sono anche interessate a sapere della Danimarca e della differenza culturale fra i nostri paesi. Le stiamo aiutando con i compiti e le abbiamo aiutate nella preparazione del ballo di fine anno per la scuola. Ci piace davvero tanto passare il tempo insieme a loro e sembra siano felici della nostra compagnia!

Abbiamo deciso di regalargli un trampolino affinché possano sviluppare anche le loro capacità fisiche. Grazie alla rete di contatti che abbiamo in Danimarca, abbiamo raccolto dei soldi e lo abbiamo comprato qui, anche se è molto costoso. È stata un bellissima sorpresa per le bambine. Avreste dovuto vedere le loro facce!

Che altro possiamo dire: noi consiglieremo sicuramente la Casa Famiglia di Isla ng Bata – L’isola dei Bambini nelle Filippine a tutti gli studenti danesi che hanno voglia di intraprendere uno stage all’estero.

Dear Isla,

We are the two students from Denmark, who are volunteers at Bata Ng Calabnugan from Decemeber 2015 to May 2016.
We have been asked to write you an email about our experience at the orphanage.

In Denmark we are studying to become a kind of social worker, which takes three and a half year. This is our last practical experience.

Our education is a mix between a teacher and a social worker, and the most important thing in our work, is to secure the safety and the care for the child.

The reason why we chose the Philippines for our internship is to experience the big culture difference from Denmark. It’s important for us to get to know how other countries are working with kids, who have different backgrounds, and here at Bata Ng Calabnugan we really get to know all the kids who have had a tough start in their life.

When we arrived here we got a very warm welcome from all the staff at Bata Ng Calabnugan. They all want us to take part of they daily routines, show us how they do their job and we have been with Roselyn and Anie to visit some of the kids’ parents.

These small things is very useful for our education, and we also hope they can use some of our knowledge in the future.
We will definitely recommend this place to new student, who wants to take an internship aboard.

We have now been here at the orphanage for 3 months and we love it. We have got a very strong relationship to all the girls and we are looking forward to come here every day. We are so happy to see the girls so happy everyday and how they enjoy each other, they are all like sisters for each other. We have a schedule, which change almost every day, so one day we are working from 10am-5pm, so we can spend time with the young kids who are not in school. We play with them, read books for them and we are trying to teach them basic English, like count to ten and English words. The biggest challenge for us to be with the young girls is, that it’s hard to communicate with them, because our Visayan skills are very small. But we really enjoy spending time with them and play with them, and it seems like they enjoy our company.

The youngest girl, Angel was only 2 months when we came in December and we decided, that we wanted to prepare her in a cognitive way. We made it as a goal, that we every day will do some training with her, such as have eye contact, which will be a big influence to her social-wellbeing in the future, to train her back muscles so she will be able to hold her head herself, and then we will spend a lot of time with her alone, where we talk to her and have focus just on her, which can make a big difference for her abilities to communicate with others. That’s some of the thing we learn on our education, so it is very nice to test our skills and to test it on such a wonderful group of kids, that’s just frosting on the cake.

Other days we are working from 2pm-9pm, so we can spend time with the schoolgirls, when they come back home. With them our job is different. We talk to them about life and some of them tell us, if they have some troubling or worries. They are very interested in Denmark and we tell them about the big culture difference and how life is in Denmark.
We also help them with homework and preparation for school proms and stuff like that.

We have got the idea that we want to buy a trampoline for the girls, because a trampoline is very good for their physical ability such as walking, running, jumping etc. and it can be used for both the small kids and adults. But here a trampoline is very expensive especially the transportation fee, so we contacted our network in Denmark and asked if they wanted to support the project. We managed to get the amount we needed and have now bought a 16 feet big trampoline, which is supposed to arrive within 3 weeks. We have managed to keep it as a surprise for the girls, and we are really looking forward to see the girl’s faces, when they get it.
